What Value Can a Coach Bring to My Professional Development

For those of you who may be on the fence about the value a coach can bring to your professional development, here is some food for thought.

A good coach is a trusted partner to help you improve your performance and skills, such as how to become a more effective as a leader, how to progress in your career, achieving work life balance, becoming a more effective communicator, improving your productivity, etc. Starting with your strengths, a good coach will work with you to co-create goals that will help you get from where you are to where you want to be.

You can count on a good coach providing you with a safe harbor for you to be yourself, without judgment or criticism. A good coach is there to just listen to you, act as your sounding board, and celebrate your successes. He or she will be your greatest cheerleader. A good coach will share his or her perspectives (not advice) and leave it up to you to decide whether the perspective works for you and if so, how best to implement it into your life.

Finally, if a coach and the coaching client were in a car, the coach would seat you in the car, place himself or herself in the passenger seat and encourage, endorse, acknowledge and support you until you develop your own driving style and feel comfortable enough to go it alone.
